Angel Cabrales presents his artistic production as a means of solidarity and activism for immigrant and human rights. His practice is centered on sculpture, mixed media, and installations with elements of video, light, and audio. He blends elements of science fiction and nostalgia to allow for dialogues on complex human and socio-political issues.
The Pursuit of Happiness, Adventure and Migration was commissioned for the National Liberty Museum in 2024. The work consists of a large board with game tiles atop a wooden table. Each game tile contains a short anecdote detailing the real experiences of immigrants temporarily sheltered in El Paso, TX. The piece is a spin on the popular board game The Game of Life, in which players go through the fictional canon events of a privileged individual, such as buying a car or starting a business. Cabrales reimagines the narrative of the original game from the point of view of an immigrant. The sterilized militarization of the border is reflected by the small 3D printed border patrol figures on the board.
The presentation of human rights activist, priest, and El Paso native Ruben Garcia reveals the community’s fight for justice. The game board is accompanied by video projections displaying clips from interviews he held with refugees at various aid shelters. Though Cabrales used an AI filter to alter the interviewees’ facial features to protect their identities, the raw emotions of the migrants are palpable as they recount their journeys to the southern United States border. Cabrales delicately balances the irony and playfulness of the game to reveal the tragedies borne of the migrant journey. By placing the viewer at the game table, Cabrales fosters perspective and empathy as he reveals the human condition that is disregarded in anti-immigration propaganda.

La pieza es una variación del popular juego de mesa The Game of Life, en el que los jugadores atraviesan los eventos ficticios y canónicos de la vida de un individuo privilegiado, como comprar un auto o iniciar un negocio. Cabrales reimagina la narrativa del juego original desde la perspectiva de un inmigrante. La militarización esterilizada de la frontera se refleja en las pequeñas figuras impresas en 3D de la patrulla fronteriza colocadas en el tablero.
La presentación del activista de derechos humanos, sacerdote y originario de El Paso, Rubén García, pone de manifiesto la lucha de la comunidad por la justicia. El tablero de juego se acompaña de proyecciones de video que muestran fragmentos de entrevistas que él realizó con refugiados en diversos albergues de ayuda. Aunque Cabrales utilizó un filtro de IA para alterar los rasgos faciales de los entrevistados y proteger su identidad, las emociones crudas de los migrantes son palpables al relatar sus viajes hacia la frontera sur de Estados Unidos. Cabrales equilibra con delicadeza la ironía y el carácter lúdico del juego para revelar las tragedias derivadas del recorrido migrante. Al situar al espectador en la mesa de juego, Cabrales fomenta la perspectiva y la empatía al exponer la condición humana que es ignorada en la propaganda antiinmigrante.
